The unfinished Adirondack Chair
Personally I don't add a finish to my chairs. Every other year or so, I spray them with Thompson's water sealer. This can be done every year, but it's personal preference.
Since the chairs I make are made from pressure treated wood, you will need to let them dry out in the sun before you can start painting them. The wood will still bleed the chemicals that are used for the pressure treating for about 6 months.
Unless you live in the extreme heat of the south someplace, I would not recommend painting my chairs the first year that you have them. The reason I say this about the south is that the hot sun has a tendency to dry the chair out much faster.
It is not recommended that you paint or stain anything made from pressure treated wood the first year that you have it. The release of the treatment process will not let your paint stick, and your stain has a good tendency to run.
